Guten Morgen, London!
Describing the German Gymnasium Grand Café in London isn’t easy. It’s grand, cozy and a bit magical. I didn’t know too much about this spot before my good friend, Jana H, invited me so I was completely blown away by this not-average-at-all Sunday breakfast.
Where:
The German Gymnasium is across the road from Kings Cross station, making it the perfect location to either say good bye to friends or have London friends welcome you to town if you are travelling with the Eurostar. We noticed staff storing luggage for a number of customers which I thought was a lovely touch.
The history:
The German Gymnasium used to be just that, a German Gymnasium built in 1865 for the German Gymnastic Society. It even hosted the indoor events for London’s first Olympic games in 1866! Read a bit more here. Now they serve the most mouth watering Mittel-European (Middle-European) food.
Try this:
4 out of 5 in our group opted for the GG Breakfast and they couldn’t stop talking about how incredible the rosti’s where. I opted for the Bacon & Egg Brezsant and I will be sprinting back there soon to taste that deliciousness again. The coffee was great, our table had a variety of coffees and everyone raved about it. It wasn’t burnt, the cappuccinos didn’t have chocolate on top and the perfect temperature.
The extra bits:
Going anywhere in London before 11:00 on a weekend will mean you’ll see a quieter side of town which I love. Everything feels extra special. The same rule applied for the German Gymnasium. We got to take photos of this beautiful location with no one in the upstairs restaurant which only open later in the day.
The best surprise was the quirky, happy music playing in the (incredibly beautiful) bathrooms! So don’t forget to pop into the loo for a little German boogie session.
Danke, German Gymnasium, you will be seeing us again soon!
What a beautiful place!. And what about some German beer?
