If you are looking for a slightly different travel experience than islands or big cities then the Klein Karoo in South Africa is just for you.
South Africa has a range of wonderful travel opportunities like the Kruger National Park and of course the beautiful Cape Town with all its history, but this is not the type of country where you should just see the major tourist attractions.
When to go:
The Klein Karoo is the perfect road trip from Cape Town. The vast desert landscape has a calming and humbling effect. I suggest going in May or October to avoid the serious heat or frosty winters, but it’s a place of beauty in any season.
Where to stay:
You’ll most likely get blue skies, and with a large number of nature reserves and game lodges to visit, there is so much to explore. Gamkaberg and Swartberg Nature Reserve has a range of accommodation and activities. If you need something with a bit more luxury then go through Booking.com to find the right spot to rest your feet.
What to see:
Make sure to visit Oudtshoorn and Ladismith to stop for an icy drink, and see an amount of ostriches that will make you dizzy. If you are heading towards the coast then driving through Suurbraak and the Tradouws Pass is highly recommended. You can also opt to take the popular Route 62 drive which will take you through the Klein Karoo and all the way to Port Elizabeth.
This is our favourite moments of our most recent visit to the Klein Karoo:
