Any dog that has the word “lion” in it’s second name needs to be on our “Woofs of the World” list. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is one ferocious hunter, hence the nickname “Lion Dog” or “African Lion Dog”, but he also knows how to find a spot in your heart.
Where: By know you would have probably figured out that the Ridgeback hails from somewhere in Africa (Their known as the African Lion Hound, after all). Their homeland is no other than Zimbabwe (previously known as Southern Rhodesia), where it was bred as a hunting dog, retriever, guard and even human babysitter. The official breed dates back to the jazz era, 1922.
Colour: The Ridgeback is known for his shades of red, and sometimes you can find a white spot on their chest and toes. Sounds like Santa Clause.
Age: For a big breed they have a fairly long lifetime of 10 – 12 years. Although it’s never long enough, is it?
Size: At 61 – 69cm and 21 – 40kg the fall into the “big boy” category.
Who would like them: A confident pack-leader, that’s who. They need plenty of exercise (mental and physical), love consistency and following a healthy diet. They are really for people who like a fiercely loyal dog, but who are also comfortable in training and staying the leader. If you don’t like super cute faces, and huge paws, then this lion is not for you.
We need a little lion in our lives.
